The college search, reimagined
Most college searches start with a list of schools. We start with you. What you care about. How you learn. What matters. The right school is the one that matches what you want.
No credit card needed. A free match. Ready in minutes.
Why it feels so hard
Rankings measure the school. We match schools based on who you are and what you're interested in.
Thousands of options, sorted by prestige. Where do you even start when nothing is sorted by what fits you?
Ranking lists hand everyone the same answer — without ever asking what this student actually wants.
Every school asks for something different, and it's on you to keep track of all of it.
How it works
We'll ask some follow-up questions to fill in some gaps. Then we generate your profile.
We identify the best matches in the country based on what you told us. Adjust important factors to see other options. Explore matches you didn't even think of.
You can select up to ten colleges to create application tracking cards. See each application's requirements and deadlines in a single place.
A sample match, up close
We think you'd click with Carleton College because you light up when learning is discovery rather than memorization — and Carleton is genuinely strong in Psychology, taught at a close 9:1 ratio in a town setting that fits what you described. And on your profile, it's a realistic bet — a place you could count on.
Why it fits
Honest tradeoffs

And one you'd never have searched for
Everything drawing you to Carleton — small, intellectual, a little quirky, strong in psychology, a DIII swim team, and trails out the back door — sitting 1,600 miles west, where you'd never have thought to look.
Full Trail scores every college in the country against your profile, then surfaces the strong fits outside the places you'd think to search.
The difference
Your profile determines the best matches for you. You don't have to figure out how to make yourself fit someone's rankings.
The most important factor in where you apply is you. What you are interested in. Where you want to be. You determine your best matches. We help you find them based on what you are interested in and where you want to be.
Your profile isn't just about where you want to apply. It helps you think through the story you want to tell in your applications, then live during your time at college. It's your journey. We keep you at the center of the process.

Questions
Ranking sites sort schools by things specific to the school. We sort by fit to a specific student, built from what they tell us matters. Two students using My College Trail see two completely different sets of matches.
No. You can build a full profile and see matches without any scores. Eventually we ask about academic details to sharpen matches, but the search starts with who the student is, not their transcript.
Both. The profile and the search belong to the student, and the reasoning behind every match is visible so parents can follow along, weigh cost and outcomes, and support the process without taking it over.
Your top 30 ranked matches, live re-ranking as you adjust your priorities, and application cards that track deadlines, essays, and fees for every school you're applying to. It's cancel-anytime, and matches you've already revealed stay visible to you even if you pause.
A subscription includes application cards for up to 10 schools. If you're applying to more, you can add a pack of 10 extra cards anytime for $4.99. There is no need to change your plan.
Admit rates, net price, graduation rates, and other outcome figures come from the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard, the government's official dataset. Application requirements and deadlines are drawn from each school's official application pages, and we flag anything worth confirming so you always verify dates against the source before you rely on them.
No. We never sell student data — not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone. A profile exists for one reason: to power that student's matches and applications. Many of the students who use My College Trail are minors, and we hold that line strictly.
It's yours. Your profile and the matches you've revealed remain accessible. You can come back and pick up where you left off whenever you're ready.
